The Bay Village Schools have a long history of excellence in music education.  The school district has boasted an orchestra program since 1972 when it was founded by Mr. Frank Pendergrass and Mrs. Nada Crews.  Today we proudly continue what they started.

About the Program

The Formative Years
The middle school has four fine string groups: Fifth Grade Strings, Sixth Grade Strings, Seventh Grade Orchestra and Eighth Grade Orchestra. The seventh and eighth grade orchestras often combine in concert to for the BMS Orchestra which performs at festivals and adjudicated events each year. An advanced extracurricular group, BMS Honors Orchestra meets after school on Tuesdays and can be joined by audition.

Bay High School Orchestras
The Bay High Chamber Orchestra  and  Rocket Orchestra have received praise and accolades from clinicians and adjudicators alike.  The ensembles have a vigorous leadership program that empowers students to contribute to their section, celebrate success and promote individual growth.  The Chamber Orchestra is often joined by the Chamber Winds in concert to perform full orchestra works and frequently collaborates with the choral department to present large masterworks such as selections from Handel's "The Messiah".  Our Dazzle-Award-nominated Pit Orchestra performs original Broadway and off-Broadway scores in conjunction with the Bay High Theatre Department's Spring Musical productions.

So very musical! Phrasing was very nice! You know how to shape a melodic line and go beyond what is written - BRAVO!
John Krumm, State Contest Judge (2019)

More than just a class

Orchestra gives students a creative outlet; a safe space full of support to better understand themselves; a collaborative experience that requires and celebrates teamwork. Bay Orchestra students learn not just the technical aspects of playing their instruments, but more importantly the musicality that brings music to life.
The Bay High School Orchestra's mission is to foster a lifelong relationship with music among listeners and participants by developing individual musical artistry; pursuing ensemble excellent through mutual respect and collaboration; and performing music for diverse audiences in and around our community.

Orchestra gives me an outlet; if I’m having a rough day, I can count on someone from our “family” to give me a hug, or find a piece to play that will cheer me up.

Anna Walker, BHS graduate
Without the Bay High String program, it would be impossible for me to be where I am today as a person and as a musician. The connections and resources it has provided to me has allowed me to pursue music on a high level, while still having fun and making great friends.

Claire Reid, BHS graduate
It’s an amazing thing to watch your children pick up an instrument in 4th grade, afraid and unsure of themselves, and watch their growth over the years in their confidence and love of music. They certainly wouldn’t be where they are today without such an incredible music program...
